We are in a new teaching series at crossWinds called "Say What?" It's a look at some of the statements Jesus made. Yesterday we talked about Jesus call to Love Your Enemies (Luke 6:27-29, 35-36).
Today I received this picture via email. The people represented in the picture are (left to right) German Chancellor Angela Merkel; Tony Blair, England; Kofi A. Annan, UN; George Bush; Osama bin Laden; Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh; and Jiang Zemin, former president of China. And that's Jesus on his knees with the basin.
This picture was orignally used to promote a conference on the character of God. The poster drew deep emotional responses.
So I was wondering... how does it make you feel? What does it make you think? Thumbs up or thumbs down?
How would your response change if Jesus wasn't in the picture... what if it was George Bush washing the feet?
Post your responses.

My initial response is that's just like Jesus isn't it? Serving, loving with no regard to what he will get in return. If it were Bush washing the feet, the cynic in me would wonder what is behind the action? I would think it's a political move to motivate in some way. What's he hoping to get in return? It wouldn't even cross my mind that he could be doing it simply for love. It's not because I don't trust our president...it's because I do trust human nature. I look through the eyes of my experience. When Grace saw the picture she pointed right at Osama bin Laden and said, "Daddy". She also looks through the eyes of her experience...as far as she's concerned Osama bin Laden resembles her dad more than the others do. Jesus does the same...he sees us through his experience...yes, who we are, but more importantly who he created us to be.
At first glance of the picture I was not reacting well shall we say. Then I remember how Peter had said "Lord your not washing my feet", and Jesus responded by saying "unless I wash your feet, you have no part in me". It was symbolic of his sacrifice. Ahaa, now it makes sense. We all must be cleansed, I repent in dust and ashes.....
